Ask the Founder: Do You Do Weight Training at CaliUnity?

It’s a great question, and one we get asked a lot.

If by weight training you mean barbells, heavy dumbbells, big machines and the type of kit you’d find in a traditional gym — then no, that’s not what we do at CaliUnity. There are plenty of excellent places in Bath that specialise in that kind of training, and if that’s your goal, we’d be happy to recommend them.

But here’s what we do use: small amounts of external weight (usually between 1–10 kilos) as a supplement to bodyweight training. For example, weighted pull-ups or added resistance in certain movements.

Why We Focus on Bodyweight First

The people who join CaliUnity aren’t training for bodybuilding competitions, CrossFit events, or stepping on stage. They’re training for life. They want to:

  • Feel stronger and more capable in everyday movements

  • Avoid injuries and move with more freedom

  • Get toned, fit, and confident without the intimidation of heavy equipment

  • Build long-term strength and mobility that carries into later life

For these goals, you simply don’t need big weights.

The Benefits of Calisthenics

We’ve found that bodyweight training not only builds strength, but also improves flexibility, mobility, and coordination — all while being safer and more enjoyable for most people. It’s skill-based, so it feels more like progress than punishment. And most importantly, it’s fun.

While we don’t focus on traditional weight training, we do use weights as a tool to enhance your calisthenics journey. It’s all about supporting your goals in the smartest, safest way possible.

P.S. You don’t need heavy weights to get strong — bodyweight training (with a little smart supplementation) is enough to build strength, mobility, and confidence for life.
